I was driving along the highway toward Gippsland when I saw it ... a car pulled over to the side of the road with a man staring into the sky in awe of a wedge-tail eagle.
It would have been reassuring to see an everyday person taking enjoyment in the subtle beauties of nature if it weren’t for what happened next ... the man threw an empty aluminium can into the long grass behind him, probably from an alcoholic beverage being New Years Day and all. The can soared into the grass as effortlessly as the flying eagle above, my heart sunk.
This event, which was as much a privilege as a burden to witness, serves well as a metaphor for humanity’s relationship with the environment. It is a sad contradiction. We damage the thing which we depend upon most.
